Let's Get 5 Tandem Bikes for Schools for the Blind!
Eric’s son, Garrett (pictured together above), lost his vision in 2000 to a malignant brain tumor. Everyone's heart broke when he told his mother, "Mom, I'm forgetting what things look like."
Months later Garrett received a tandem bicycle through the generous donations of individuals and a corporation. It was magic. Like turning on a light switch Garrett was back. The immediate change the bicycle had on him was profound.
Tandem bicycles are very expensive and outside the budgets for the average family and many schools. The Rush-Miller Foundation was founded on this simple premise....'put kids on bikes'. That's all they do and we want to help them now and again later.
In the 11 years since starting the foundation they have helped hundreds and nearly thousands of kids get the thrill of riding a bike for the first time. They have tandem bikes in 23 states and 6 countries!
While to some the bicycle is a simple hunk of metal, they have witnessed the powerful transformation of seeing what happens when a child does something they never thought was possible...riding a bike. The impact is profound and heartwarming!
To celebrate Garrett's 10-year cancer survival anniversary (he was given only a 50/50 chance of living 5 years), Eric and the foundation embarked on the journey to purchase two tandem bicycles for every blind school in the US. There are around 40 schools.
We will support their efforts and purchase 5 tandem bicycles at a cost of $590 a piece. We will also rally the makers of these bikes to support Eric and his mission.
If you want to donate the entire cost of a bike, many bikes, or just a portion - know that every dime we raise here will go to these bikes and these bikes alone!
